WHO Malaria Guidelines Update | 10 September 2026

WHO has updated its malaria guidelines. What should healthcare professionals know?

On 10 September 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) released an updated consolidated malaria guideline with important recommendations across malaria prevention, treatment and vaccination.

Among the key updates are recommendations relating to:
• Intermittent preventive treatment for pregnant women living with HIV
• Single low-dose primaquine for reducing P. falciparum transmission
• A new artemether-lumefantrine formulation for infants weighing <5 kg
• Three-dose versus four-dose malaria vaccine schedules in perennial transmission settings

But the important question for healthcare professionals is not simply “What changed?”

It is also: Who does the recommendation apply to? Under what conditions? And what does it mean for practice in Nigeria?

Global recommendations should be interpreted alongside national guidelines, local epidemiology and individual patient characteristics.

Staying current matters. So does understanding the context behind the evidence.
